Vote to stop the BNP

Vote to stop the BNP on 4 June

By Sabby Dhalu – Joint Secretary of Unite Against Fascism

There is a real possibility that the BNP could win seats in the European Parliament. This would be the biggest electoral break through for a fascist party in British history.

The most recent and reliable polls consistently show that the BNP is very close to winning a number of seats in the European Parliament. Most polls show that BNP on 5-7% nationally which would give the BNP 3 seats and polls tend to underestimate BNP support.

The most recent You Gov poll on 1 June, the biggest so far of ,over 5,000 people, put the BNP on 7% of those certain to vote. On these figures the BNP could win a seat each in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber and the West Midlands and East of England regions.

In these circumstances, those commentators like Nick Cohen who said he found a BNP surge ‘hard to find’ - others have said that ‘the threat from the BNP has been overblown’ - are creating a false sense of complacency.

As Unite Against Fascism has argued, we need the opposite, an alarm bell to tell people that if they don’t vote on 4 June they may help the BNP make their biggest breakthrough ever.

The lesson of Europe is that stopping such a breakthrough is much easier than reversing it. The BNP can be stopped in these elections but only if people vote. If you don't vote you help the BNP. That is why every democrat should make sure they go out and vote on 4 June.

I hope people do get out and vote ,but I must admit to having a sinking feeling. As when I talk to people I find the apathy disturbing not just in regard to the BNP but to voting in general.

All I ever hear is people saying don't vote BNP because bla bla bla. I turn on Channel 4 and theres a show on about them being this fascist group and am like these guys won't do anything. And I read this and am like WHO IS VOTING FOR THESE PEOPLE? What are they doing in there in areas that make them so popular? Why are they so high in the polls, we don't see them opening children daycare centers do we? It's crazy that this lot are still about.

If only I was old enough to vote (next year!).
Though I am old enough realise that a party like the BNP should never be allowed to win seats, especially not in Europe.
If I can see it, surely you can too? If are eligible to vote, use it, if only to stop this hideous party winning seats.

It's just unbelieveable that anybody thinks Nazism is going to solve their problems.

The reason people are voting for the BNP is because governments have conceded to racism constantly for at least the last thirty years. One racist anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim story after another creates a narrative in which immigration is seen as "the problem" which no mainstream party will sort out.

In reality the UK profits hugely from immigration and ministers should be saying so. Giving in to racism just gives ammunition to fascists.

Great stuff PL for sending a clear message. If the BNP get in it will only because of a low turnout. This country does NOT support fascism so let's make sure there is a real alternative on offer next time!
